Alan Millett, founder and chairman of the chain of outdoor stores that bore his name has died. The first Millet’s family shop was established in 1893 with Alan entering the business after leaving the army in 1948. Over the years that followed and until the company acquired a stock market listing in the nineteen eighties, in addition to its own decal the company traded under a range of other names, but by the time the company was sold in 1986 there were close to 150 Millet’s stores. In a release issued by Millet’s owners, JD Sports, Millet’s MD Lee Bagnall said: “I’d like to pay tribute to Alan and thank him for having the vision and drive to create what is now a much loved favourite on the high street”.
